PRISM Clinic: An Innovative Model of Clinical Education for Rural Primary Health Care Service

PRISM’s aims are to provide a rich learning environment for health care professional students while on their healthcare practicum and to offer valuable rehabilitation services to northern health patients. In order to build a sustainable, best practice service, it is critical that we track and measure a number of indicators such as physiotherapy service provisions (ie) source of referrals, number of sessions per patient; patient outcomes (ie) patient satisfaction questionnaire; and student clinical education (ie) Student satisfaction questionnaire, Assessment of Physiotherapy Clinical Performance.

The objectives of PRISM are to provide a rich learning environment for health care professional students that allows them to interact and develop relationships with other health care professions in rural and remote settings and to offer rehabilitation services to patients as their condition and care needs change during the course of a chronic or acute illness with the aim of improving the function and mobility of northerners. We want to look at the PRISM model and see how it impacts 3 key components: service delivery, patient outcomes and student learning.
