Randomized controlled trial of balance training for fall reduction in individuals with COPD

Individuals living with Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD) may have problems with their balance and a higher incidence of falls compared to those of a similar age who do not have COPD.  Pulmonary rehabilitation is recommended for people with COPD.  These training programs, however, do not typically include balance training or fall prevention strategies.  Therefore, the aim of this study is to determine the effects of a balance-training program for patients with COPD who may be at risk of falling.

We are recruiting individuals with COPD who are starting the Pulmonary Rehabilitation Program here at St Paul’s Hospital.  If you are interested in participating, please contact Ashley Kirkham, Research Assistant.
